Introducing Speech Recognition in Schools
The downloads below give you an overview of how speech recognition (SR) has been used in schools, by students with special educational needs. Some schools and research projects have found that speech recognition has been extremely useful for students with writing or other difficulties, while other schools have not found it helpful at all.
The presentations were produced as part of a project which aimed to:
- Investigate why SR for pupils with SEN has and has not been taken up in schools
- Create training and support materials to help staff introduce speech recognition successfully
- Evaluate the materials
- Evaluate the use of SR by pupils
A copy of the finished training pack was sent to all secondary schools in Scotland.

Some of the presentations will include links to other files on our website. Click on the link with your mouse to download the file. Some of these files are in Microsoft Word format, some are Adobe Acrobat .pdf files, and some are .mpg videos. After looking at one of these types of files, return to PowerPoint to continue the presentation.

PC Note: We have found that the videos will play best in Windows Media Player, Realplayer, or Winamp

We have tried to indicate how big the downloadable files are. As a guide, 1000Kb (roughly 1Mb) may take between 3 and 8 minutes to download over a modem connection.
Find out about how teachers have actually used speech recognition in schools with the following presentations which were presented at a study day, held on 12th June 2002, to report the results of the CALL project.
We are grateful to the teachers and the students for permission to distribute these reports.
